Currently, Ermioni Vassiou is a PhD candidate at University of West Attica continued with a thesis entitled: “Study of physico-chemical degradation of iron gall inks based on historical Byzantine recipes. Investigation of the role of metal ions by non-destructive spectroscopic techniques.” under the supervision of Dr. Andreas Karydas (XRF laboratory, INPP at NCSR “Demokritos”), Prof. Stamatios Boyatzis and Αssistant Professor Vassiliki Kokla at the Department of Conservation of Antiquities and Works of Art, University of West Attica
Nelly Kladouri has studied Conservation of Antiquities and Works of Art, at the Technological Educational Institute of Athens (BSc).
In 2018 Nelly Kladouri successfully defended her MSc thesis, conducted in the XFR laboratory of the Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics at the NCSR Demokritos, entitled: “A technological study of a bronze pins collection of the geometric period from the sanctuary of Athena Alea at Tegea” (MSc in Cultural Heritage Materials and Technologies-University of the Peloponnese). During her postgraduate studies, Nelly Kladouri was the recipient of the scholarship awarded to the top-scoring student, by the University of the Peloponnese (CultTech Scholarship Program).
Currently, Nelly Kladouri is a doctoral candidate of the University of Peloponnese, conducting metal analysis on votive finds from various sanctuaries of Arcadia, Greece dating between the 9th -7thc. B.C.E.. The detailed micro-XRF study of metal artefacts is conducted at the XRF laboratory of the INPP.
Her primary research interest focuses on the chemical analysis, characterization and provenance study of archaeological and historical metals.
She is a regular employee in the field of Conservation of Antiquities for the Greek Ministry of Culture.
Kalliopi Tsampa has graduated from the Physics Department of the University of Athens (2017) presenting a BSc diploma work entitled: “Construction and Characterization of nuclear targets using Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy”. The period 2017-2019 Ms Tsampa attended the interdepartmental MSc program of the School of Applied Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the National Technical University of Athens (2018-2019). Kalliopi Tsampa MSc thesis was conducted at the XRF Laboratory of the Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics of NCSR “Demokritos” (2018-2019) with the subject: “Macroscopic X-ray fluorescence (MA-XRF) imaging and quantitative characterization of Platinum Group Mineral inclusions in Mycenean gold signet rings”. She has acquired extensive experience in field XRF measurements and in the analysis, calibration and quantification of MA-XRF imaging data. In March 2019, Kalliopi Tsampa has also participated in a synchrotron radiation experiment at the XRF beamline of Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste aimed to study X-ray resonant Raman scattering on gold atoms.
Dr. Andreas Germanos Karydas is Research Director at the Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics of the National Center for Scientific Research "Demokritos" and Head of the XRF Laboratory. He holds a BSc in Physics from the University of Athens and received his Ph.D. in the field of Analytical Applications of Nuclear Techniques from the National Technical University of Athens (1994). Dr. Andreas Karydas has more than twenty-five (25) years of research experience, including six (6) years (2009-2015) as leader of the XRF group of the Nuclear Science and Instrumentation Laboratory (NSIL) at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and one (1) year as senior staff of the IAEA Physics Section (2016). During his tenure at the IAEA he has been acted as Technical Officer in more than twenty (20) national and regional Technical Cooperation projects, whereas in 2015 he received a merit award in recognition of his contribution in the coordination, implementation and commissioning of a new beamline end-station at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste. His research team interests focus towards: 1) the study of fundamental X-ray interactions with matter and de-excitation processes of ionized atoms, in particular of the X-ray Resonant Raman scattering and cascade X-ray emission and 2) the development of analytical methodologies, instrumentation and interdisciplinary applications of X-ray fluorescence and Ion Beam Analysis techniques, with emphasis on the areas of cultural heritage, materials science, environmental monitoring and biomedicine/pharmaceuticals. Dr. Andreas Germanos Karydas has coordinated for INPP many National, bilateral and European competitive projects, such as the ATT-29 (PEP ATTIKIS, 2006-2008), DEMO-Research (2006-2008), IAEA-CRP (2006-2008), PROMET FP6-INCO (509126, 2004-2008), IKYDA-DAAD (2004-2006) and a bilateral Greece-Slovenia project (2002-2003). Dr. Andreas Germanos Karydas has published more than 116 articles in international peer-review journals and more than 40 in peer-review proceeding of international conferences that have received over 1,300 citations, excluding self-citations. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the X-ray Spectrometry (2005) and Microchemical Journal (2015) and member of the international advisory committee of the European X-Ray Spectrometry and Technart conferences.
